Brown noise

Deep, smooth noise to focus, study or sleep. Free, no ads, nothing to install.

Timer

Add to the mix

Use it with the full Pomodoro timer

Brown noise is a low, rumbling hiss, like a strong waterfall heard from a distance or the cabin of a plane. Press play above: the noise is generated in your browser, so it starts at once and never breaks for a loop. Pick deep brown noise for more rumble, layer in some rain, and choose a timer if you want it to fade out on its own or to work in Pomodoro sessions.

What is brown noise?

Brown noise, also called red noise, is random noise whose energy falls as the pitch rises: each octave up is about 6 dB quieter. It keeps the steadiness of white noise without its hiss, which is why many people find it easier to listen to for hours.

The name comes from Brownian motion, not from the colour. The deep brown noise you can pick above goes one step further and keeps almost only the rumble, best enjoyed with headphones or speakers that have some bass.

Why people use brown noise to focus

A constant sound masks the noises that pull your attention: conversations, traffic, a neighbour's music. Because brown noise has little high-frequency energy, it covers those sounds without feeling sharp, and it quickly fades into the background.

Many people with ADHD say brown noise helps them settle into a task. Research on noise and attention is still limited and results vary from person to person, so the simplest test is your own: try a 25-minute session with it and one without.

  • Keep the volume low: it should cover distractions, not fill the room.
  • Choose Pomodoro 25/5 under Timer: the noise plays while you focus and pauses during your breaks.
  • For sleep, choose 1, 2 or 8 hours: the sound fades out gently at the end.

Brown, pink, white or green noise?

White noise has the same energy at every frequency and sounds like a hiss or a detuned radio. Pink noise is softer, like steady rain. Brown noise is the deepest of the three. Green noise sits in the middle of the spectrum and sounds like a distant waterfall. Switch between them above without stopping the sound.

How the Pomodoro timer works

Four simple steps. No account, nothing to install: it runs right here in your browser.

  1. 11

    Pick what to work on

Add a task and estimate how many pomodoros it needs. The active task is credited automatically when a session ends.

  2. 22

    Start the timer

Press Start (or the Space bar) and give the task your full attention until the bell rings.

  3. 33

    Take a real break

Step away from the screen for 5 minutes. Stretch, drink some water, rest your eyes.

  4. 44

    Repeat, then rest longer

After four pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break. Your stats and streak update on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is this brown noise free?

Yes. It's free, with no ads and no account. The noise is generated in your browser, so no audio file is downloaded.

Does the brown noise loop or click?

No. Each noise is 30 seconds of stereo sound built so that its end flows into its start, and it crossfades into itself, so there is no gap, click or audible repetition.

How do I use brown noise to fall asleep?

Press play, lower the volume and choose a timer of 1, 2 or 8 hours. When it ends, the noise fades out over a few seconds instead of stopping abruptly.

Will it keep playing in another tab?

Yes, it keeps playing in a background tab. On a phone, keep the page open: some browsers pause web audio when the screen locks.

Can I mix brown noise with other sounds?

Yes. Add rain, a café, wind or a stream under Add to the mix and set each volume separately. The mix carries over to the Pomodoro timer.
