40 minute timer

Focus
25:00

Forty minutes is a sweet spot for focused work: longer than a classic pomodoro, shorter than an exhausting deep-work marathon. The countdown above is set to 40 minutes and starts with one click or the Space bar.

A good length for studying

Many classes and exams are built around 40- to 50-minute blocks, and it is also the focus length of the popular Animedoro method (40 minutes of work, 20 minutes of rest). Forty minutes gives you enough time to get into a problem set, a chapter or an essay section without the fatigue that builds up after an hour.

Pick one clear goal before you start, put your phone out of reach, and take a real break of 10 minutes when the alarm rings. If you want the breaks scheduled for you, the 45/15 and Animedoro timers alternate focus and rest automatically.

Other uses for a 40 minute timer

  • A workout: warm-up, strength circuit and cool-down.
  • Baking cakes, roasting vegetables or a lasagne in the oven.
  • A focused meeting with a hard stop.
  • Screen time or gaming limits for kids, with the countdown in fullscreen.

How the Pomodoro timer works

Four simple steps. No account, nothing to install: it runs right here in your browser.

  1. 11

    Pick what to work on

Add a task and estimate how many pomodoros it needs. The active task is credited automatically when a session ends.

  2. 22

    Start the timer

Press Start (or the Space bar) and give the task your full attention until the bell rings.

  3. 33

    Take a real break

Step away from the screen for 5 minutes. Stretch, drink some water, rest your eyes.

  4. 44

    Repeat, then rest longer

After four pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break. Your stats and streak update on their own.

Everything you need to focus. Nothing you don't.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a 40 minute timer?

Press Start or the Space bar: the countdown is already set to 40 minutes. Type any number of minutes in the field to change it.

Is 40 minutes too long to study without a break?

For most people 40 minutes is fine, followed by a 5 to 10 minute break. If your attention drops earlier, try 25-minute pomodoros instead.

Can I listen to music during the countdown?

Yes. Open the Sounds panel for lofi radio, calm focus music, rain, café sounds or brown noise.

Ready for your next focus session?
